Managing DVT During COVID Quarantine

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with DVT, you probably know the seriousness of the condition. Quite more common than most people think, it is estimated that 2 million people in the United States develop a DVT every year. In fact, the chances of getting a DVT increase as we age and doubles with each decade of life over the age of 40.

Obesity, varicose veins, pregnancy, and childbirth can unfortunately be factors that increase the risk of developing a DVT. So It’s no surprise that anyone diagnosed with DVT should exercise. We’ve all heard it, especially those diagnosed, to keep up with our leg health. And It’s true, aerobic exercises such as walking, jogging, and swimming can help increase blood flow and reduce swelling.

Unfortunately, as we develop further into the COVID crisis more and more people can become less active as we all quarantine ourselves to do our part in managing this virus. But there’s great news! Isolation does not equal less exercise. There are tons of activities you can do to stay active and keep your legs healthy.

Luckily, MTV IR has a completely safe and effective treatment for DVT. Our highly-trained physicians perform a specialized procedure called a thrombectomy. This non-invasive treatment starts at the patient’s wrist, a thin catheter is introduced into the diseased vein, then a pressurized saline solution is mixed with a blood clot-dissolving medication that is injected to soften and break apart the thrombi. The blood clot is then “vacuumed” from the veins and eliminated. In some cases, the thrombectomy can be supplemented by the placement of a stent in the vein to hold it open and re-establish proper blood flow.
